It’s Ugly

So when I realized we were posting about our favorite romance movies, stories, and the like, I almost couldn’t come up with something. I’m not one for watching romantic movies. Call me a cynic, but I just don’t like all the mushy sweetness of romance movies. Ironic, isn’t it? Considering I write romance and read romance books like they’re going out of style.

Then I realized. There are romance movies I like! There are! *looks surprised* I had trouble choosing which one was realistic enough, but not depressing for me to talk about. That’s what always gets me. It’s why I can’t read/watch Wuthering Heights or The Notebook, or any other similar movie: depression is not a good look for me. And these are movies that depress me.

Love and romance to me should be filled with laughter. Think about how good it feels to laugh and combine that with love and I think you have a perfect relationship. Oh, sure, I know not every relationship is filled with rainbows and fluffy bunny butts. But I can’t make myself watch something that’s going to make me want to pull out the box of Kleenex and have an in-depth conversation with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Munky.

That’s why I chose The Ugly Truth.

Um, really. It has nothing to do with Gerard Butler. Honestly. *cough* Mike and Abby are the most unlikely couple ever. She’s looking for someone who’ll romance her and be her “perfect” man. Mike is uncouth, coarse (and hot), with no shame whatsoever. He doesn’t really believe in love, or so you think when you’re watching this movie. He helps her to catch her ideal man using all of the things he’s learned throughout the years and in the process, he falls for Abby. She’s stubborn though, clinging to her idea of the perfect man until she loses the one she thought wasn’t worth her time.

I think love is very much like this relationship. The people who are around us on an everyday basis don’t register on our radars as possible mates. They’re the people who see the regular “us”. They’re the ones who laugh and argue and generally don’t mind it when we act like an ass. They’re people who don’t expect us to be perfect.

Love isn’t all sugary sweetness and roses, or shrieking depression. It can be beautiful and uplifting, embarrassing and comedic, it can be ugly and hurtful, brutally honest, yet infinitely endearing. And on that not-so cheerful note, I’ll leave you with a song about losing love. Just because!

I watched this movie recently. Good choice. This movie is perfect. Loved her “wishy” list and how stuck to it she was.

  3. GIRL!! I’m so shocked that you picked a Gerry Butler movie seeing as how you hate his face, his body and his accent *snort* Nice choice!!

I’ve still never heard of Gerard Butler.
Never heard of this movie either.
That blonde is cute, however. Who is she?
I don’t like “mushy sweetness” in movies either. And when I know (or perceive) a movie or book has deliberately set out to bludgeon me into tears … I rebel.
I’ll take romantic humor over mushy sweetness any day.

LOL, Gerard Butler was King Leonidas in 300, if that helps any. I hate mushy. I hate it when the hero/heroine has to die for the story to be touching. And I hate crying for movies! I’m with you, romantic comedies are way better than romantic dramas.

I wanted to see ‘300’ but never got around to it.
I saw one preview which made it look like it was animated or something. Unless I’ve confused two diff. movies.
Anyway, I guess he’d have to be a hunk to wear one of those skimpy uniforms.

    Luuuuurve Chunky Monkey!

And I’m with you about the much. I never saw The Notebook or The Piano. I’m not into that kind of thing. I haven’t seen The Ugly Truth- but maybe I’ll rent it next time the husband leaves town!

    Thanks for the suggestion, babe!

No probs! I’ve never seen The Notebook, or The Piano, or er Dear John, or any of those movies. I think On Golden Pond killed the sentimental movie streak in me when I was 7, LOL

  7. The Ugly Truth and My Life In Ruins are my two favorites (right now. That may change next week.) I agree, you shouldn’t be sunk into a depression when watching romance. What fun would that be?
