This week’s topic is about birthdays. We chose this week since we all celebrate various days scattered through the year. Wouldn’t it have been fun if we all were born the same week? Do you think the world could have handled that?
One of the things we talked about was how we could relate birthdays to what we write and since Iris got such a great response to her post about her birthday at the seaside, I decided that I’d mix it up a bit and make up a birthday celebration for one of my characters in one of my stories.
Gato, the heroine in The Season of the Witch, owns a New Age shop and I think she would celebrate her birthday in a very nature-oriented way. I picture her hosting her friends in a park near the town square. She would serve tiny little cucumber sandwiches and some tuna salad as well (She is a cat-shifter after all). Her guests would be excited about the cake which would be shaped like a goldfish bowl with a few of the little critters swimming around on blue icing.
Party hats would be worn by all and an exciting game of pin the wagging tail on the doggie would be a barking success. The birthday girl would have asked for a new crystal ball to replace that hazy one she had and I’m sure that Cord, her love interest, would’ve gotten her a lovely new silver Hamza hand necklace (which is handy (!) for keeping away the evil eye.
All in all, I think Gato’s imaginary birthday celebration would make her purr in contentment. What do you think? Name a character in a book would you like to see a celebrate a birthday or tell me about a birthday scene you read that you liked. Whenever you celebrate your own special day, enjoy!
Love the line:
“an exciting game of pin the wagging tail on the doggie would be a barking success”.
Hey, I’ve also got a character named Gato … in three of my unpublished (but completed) novels. Of course, in my case, that character is an actual feline.
Hmm, I’m gonna be hard-pressed to come up with a blog column this week. I’m blanking-out on birthdays.

Hahaha Jeff. I like that Barking comment. AND my Gato is a cat as well. She shifts from a woman to a cat.

why don’t you use birthday as a prompt for a little story ???

Now, Iris, you know I can’t think of story prompts. BwhHahaha

Am I the only one who is answering your question?
I’d like to see how Ebenezer Scrooge celebrated his birthday…I mean, we all knew he ended up “keeping Christmas well”, but surely his joie de vivre spilled over into b-days!
(I notice that Jeff ignored my ‘prompt’!)

not ignored … just drew a blank.
That happens when you reach this age. Ha.

Ohhh …. I think it’s just that I would have too many …. like a birthday bash for James bond would be interesting – no i haven’t lost the plot, I just love the man! …. Or Dr Becker … remember him?. I reckon I’d have a great time at Sheldon’s birthday party

Those all sound like great parties, Iris. Different for each man but fun in their own ways, right?

Speaking of fictional characters and their birthdays….I discovered that I share a birthday with the brilliant Hermione Granger! I was poking around on JK Rowling’s website several years ago and came across that wonderful tidbit. I’ve determined birthdates for a couple of characters, but I’m totally stuck on when Lisette’s (protagonist from latest WIP) birthday is. She is clearly not a Virgo like myself or Hermione. Perhaps I need to do a thorough investigation of astrological signs to see which one she best fits.
