Valen-Who’s Day?

My Heart’s in the Right Place
By Jeff Salter

We actually had a free spot this week, but since Hound Day landed right smack dab on Valentine’s Day I don’t have much choice but to address it.

Val Day, 2011
Two years ago, I blogged about one of the Valentine rituals I remember from Elementary School … and some of my first kisses with females-who-weren’t-my-relatives.  For a look at my column for this day in 2011 [“Valentine’s Day in Retrospect … and My First True Like”], please take a look:

Val Day, 2012
Last year, I focused more on the films, songs, literature, etc., which tug at my heart strings.  For my comments from this day in 2012 (“Romance in the Arts”), click here:

Mushy Stuff

If you just want to hang out for a minute, I guess we can discuss love, hearts, and all that mushy stuff.

I’m not what most would consider a “true romantic” kind of guy, but I’ll tell you a little secret which I think shows my heart’s in the right place.

Many years ago, when my wife was going to a distant conference with some girlfriends, I cut out several little red hearts and hid them in at various places in her suitcase.

When she and her friends got to the hotel and began unpacking, she found one of those hearts.  The other ladies clustered around and (appropriately) oohed and aahed.  As she discovered each additional hidden hearts, those other ladies were more and more impressed.  [And, I believe, quite wistful — wishing it had been their husbands who packed little hearts in their suitcases.]

Since I learned how good it made my wife feel to unpack those little paper hearts, I have slipped two or three hearts into her luggage for nearly every trip she has made … no matter how short.  If it’s overnight, she gets hearts.

So even though I’m not a candlelit-dinner-at-a-fancy-restaurant kind of guy, I think you can tell my heart’s in the right place … right in my wife’s suitcase!

Question:
Do YOU (or your spouse) have any special song, movie, or other little observance … which specifically addresses your love of each other?

I love it, Jeff, and I have a feeling, your wife would prefer the hearts in the suitcase to a fancy dinner. I think it’s beautiful ….
As for hubby and me …. hmmm …. we “have” a song by Hootie “Wanna be with you” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbJU61C5VkQ) but as such nothing really which is “ours”.

  2. Oh,Jeffrey, I think that is terribly romantic!
I can only imagine the impact that had on the other females in the group with Denise! How proud she must have been. How warmed her heart must have been! What a thoughtful thing to do.
The kids get most of the Valentine attention here. One of our wedding presents was a pair of hand embroidered pillow cases with hearts and flowers. I used to make sure I pulled those out every year but I know we skipped a few. int he last couple of years.I guess I’d better go hit the linen closet!

  3. Awwwwwwww. Wish I had more to contribute, but I don’t. Hubby and I don’t have any special song, movie, or habits. Your tradition is a very nice one, and I’m sure it’s treasured.

Sweet! Never found anything in my suitcase, but I give him the bill when I get home! Isn’t that romantic?? (JK, of course)… Song, movie? Uh… no. We’re pretty dull here. We do like classic comedies, like Bringing Up Baby — maybe the leopard song will do. 😉

In a diff. context, though still about valentine’s day:
one of my daughter’s good friends worked at an office where most/all of the ladies received flowers or some sort of gift from their husbands or boyfriends.
      But not her.
Not only was she embarrassed that she did not get the same attention her colleagues got when their gifts arrived, but she was disappointed that her husband overlooked her … and quite angry with him.
Though I think she over-reacted, hearing about that situation gave me a lot of perspective on how the female mind can function at such times.

Awwwwww! Yes, it is those little things that make us gals swoon. I think for me, it is the tiny, daily acts of service (read “The 5 Love Languages”) that tell me my husband loves me. But he’s also mastered the grand gestures as well. Still, it’s the things he does to make my day easier (like picking up the gallon of milk or starting dinner when I’m at dance) that remind me of how muc he’s a keeper.

I wouldn’t be much help to my mate in the kitchen. But I can (and DO) pick up needed grocery items.
Not sure if that makes me a keeper or not. Ha.

  8. Aww, the hearts are much nicer than a candle lit dinner and much more romantic. How sweet of you to do that for her. I am sure it makes her trips special.
