Saving the Earth One Grocery Bag At A Time

Hello Four Foxes One Hound World!  My apologies on being absent the past two weeks.  One of them I had a lot on my plate (not like I don’t always have a lot, but it was a bit extreme for me) and the other I totally spaced on.  But I’m baaaaaaacccckkk!

Quick recap on what I should have posted….Free week….I was free to forget certain responsibilities?  I know.  Not a good excuse and I apologize to my blogmates.  And what would I have done with a $5000 tax refund?  While I’d love to say it would go towards a fabulous vacation in Hawaii or Europe, it’s going towards the personal issue I’ve had to deal with.  And thankfully we ARE getting a refund.  (Bit of advice….You know how people always say to not do business with family?  Follow it!  Sadly, I ignored that advice and am paying the price now.)

But now, on to happier, more Earth-friendly topics.  Can I just say how much I LOVE those reusable grocery bags?  You can fit more in them, they’re fairly sturdy for the task at hand, and they make an excellent receptacle for those times I need to clean out my car but don’t feel like actually organizing it.  I hate when I forget to bring them to the store and get stuck with ten bazillion plastic bags.  Some baggers only put 3 items in each one and when I get home, I have to make multiple trips back and forth to unload my van.  My kids love that the reuseable bags have handles.  Back in my day, they used paper bags and loaded them up.  UGH!  Those things were heavy when you were 7 years old trying to carry them in from Mom’s station wagon.  (Oh yes, we were totally Brady Bunch rad with the family station wagon.)  My sisters and I would fight to be the first to get to the bag with the cereal boxes or toilet paper.  Nobody wants the can bag.  I still don’t want the can bag, but at least those lightweight grocery bags have some strength to them.  That was the first thing that impressed me.  How much you can actually carry in one of those.  I still haven’t perfected that ratio between the size of my grocery list, the number of impulse items I buy, and the number of reuseable grocery bags to bring inside the store.  But every once in a while, I get it right and I do my little happy dance.

It’s the little things in life that make me happy….even if it’s just a grocery bag.

    Glad to have you back.
Yeah, I completely hear you about doing business with family. Nearly always comes back and bites you in the keester.
I used to love the brown paper groc. bags. You could do so many things with them. And the cat always enjoyed them too.

My favorite thing to make with brown paper bags was school book covers. Other friends were more creative in how they decorated theirs, but still, it served as scratch paper often for all those math books. 🙂

  2. Yea! Micki’s back! We have been worried about you…Jeff and I thought of you at the Bookfest this Saturday. If we didn’t hear from you, we were going to check on you.
Sorry about your business problems.Friends and family….it’s hard.
Those paper bags…I was thinking about them the other day…yep heavy ,and would tear; horrible in wet weather, but even wet, our cats loved them, too! We used to cover our schoolbooks with them, too.We all looked like we carried naughty-books in plain, brown wrappers!
    I’ll do my ” bag-lady ” stories on Friday.
    Glad you are here, Micki.

Thanks for the concern, but I had other issues going on as well…not bad, just time consuming. Anyhow, it brings a giggle to my face when I think about a trip to the grocery store when I was in college. No car, so my friend and I walked. We bought too many groceries and then it started to rain. One by one the paper bags started falling apart, so we’d cram the rest into the still functional bags. When we got close enough to our dorm, I ran back for some sturdier totes. (Groceries were all over the side of the road.) Just when we get them all in the rainproof bags and head back to the dorm. I foolishly asked, “How much worse can it get?” I kid you not, a car goes flying by at the precise moment we are walking by a large puddle. By then my friend and I couldn’t help but laugh at the ridiculousness of the situation. Over 20 years later, we still remember that day. We also hope the driver of that car peed his pants because we are quite sure he was laughing that hard.

I join you in the “backness” party 😉

Can you return the plastic bags for recycling? It drove me absolute nutty when I came to Australia when every three items were bagged in plastic bags, until I finally got organised to take my calico bags along. Now I’ve got a couple of these shopping baskets AND LOVING THEM !!!

Yes, when we accumulate too many of those pesky things, I take them all to the recycling bins outside the grocery store. That is an adorable shopping basket, but that would only work for me if it’s a small trip since we’re a family of 5.
