If I were to be a character in a novel, I have no clue as to who I’d want to be. There’s a part of me who’d like to be one of those delicious villains who always get the cool lines. (Alan Rickman in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”. Oh hell, Alan Rickman in just about any villain role.) But you see, I have an intense fear of dying and most of the really bad guys, end up dead. The badder the guy, the more gruesome the death. (And yes, for all the grammar nazis out there, I do realize that the correct word for “badder” is worse. You do realize that you’re reading a blog and a blog entry composed of someone who is a bit off the cuff, right?) But I’m not sure I really want to be the hero/heroine either. Sure, they triumph in the end, but they have to put up with a lot of crap to get their happy ending. Honestly, I think I’d like to have the role of “Plucky, Comic Relief.” Think of Ron in Harry Potter. A quick scan of my bookshelf just confirmed that. While I haven’t thought of any specific character I’d like to be, I’m quite certain I’d much rather play that secondary role. Mammy in “Gone With the Wind”. R2D2 in “Star Wars.”
Forget the starring roles. Everyone wants that. Which second fiddle would you prefer to be?

LOL, Micki! You got me before I had a chance to comment on your grammar! (I’m known as the Grammar Goddess on another loop.) I enjoyed your blog, in spite of that. You thought outside of the box for your reply to this week’s question. Isn’t it amazing how most of us would have immediately think of being the number one character when asked who we’d like to be? I guess that’s the way of the human being, to think of one’s self as most important. I’ve never thought of who the #2 character I’d like to be. hmm Let me think on that.
Okay. How about, Spock, or C3PO (since you mentioned R2D2) Their logic was comic relief. I think I’d fit in real good as a character of comic relief. I’ve been referred to as comic relief, or “entertainment value” before. LOL!

I had thought of a secondary character, but it was only to change the storyline…that’s more like me than putting myself in someone else’s shoes.
Mammy’s good, you certainly don’t want to be Prissy, either in name or manner!

I definitely agree that Alan Rickman’s role in RH was deliciously wicked and would be a delight for any actor. Also Rickman’s role as the uber bad guy in Die Hard!
Yes, I also agree that playing really interesting secondary characters could be more fun than having the leading roles.

Although I personally do not consider him “secondary,” my number one choice for a #2 character will always, always be Mr. Spock as played by Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek). If I couldn’t have that spot, I think I’d choose one of Alan Rickman’s roles too – one of his bad guys, for sure.

Spock is a terrific character. And you’re right: he wasn’t supposed to be the ‘leading man’ of that series, but he was so much a part of the success of that show that you couldn’t pull him out and still have Star Trek.
