Diamonds Are Forever

No, actually that is far from my favorite James Bond movie, which is the topic for the week. It’s just that you really can’t do a Bond movie justice by seeing it only once…or twice or…you get the picture. And no matter how they have aged, each remains pure, sparkling entertainment.

Although I made up the topic list, I can’t come up with a real favorite and I wish I had at least left the idea until the last, since we’re doing Bond movie themes all month.

Bond cat 001

See, even my cat fell asleep trying to decide on a favorite!

The best I can do is give you perhaps my favorite one from each of the Bonds.

My favorite Sean Connery one? Probably “Goldfinger”. I still hear about it a great deal, as it is still popular in Kentucky. I live about 35 miles as the crow flies from Fort Knox. In the museum is the scale model that they used in making the movie, pre-computer graphic (CGI), days.

George Lazenby had only the one, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” and it may be my husband’s favorite of all. He is a pro-marriage romantic.(However, if I had had Mrs. Bond’s pre-marriage reputation, I’m sure I would have been out of the running for him.)

Roger Moore’s “For Your Eyes Only” is the one I have seen the most, so I guess we’ll go with that one. I do enjoy his Bonds, for pure escapism. And he looked best in the Commander’s uniform.

It is hard to pick which of Timothy Dalton’s I liked the best; I like them both. OK, “The Living Daylights”;(I love John Rhys-Davies and Art Malik in any roles they play.)

I’m torn on Pierce Brosnan’s, too; I truly enjoy them. I will say, “Goldeneye”, I think because the anticipation was so high for this, his and the  first Bond movie after a long hiatus in the series. I am also tempted to say, “The World Is Not Enough”.( Don’t tempt me at this point!) “Goldeneye” is also an eye-candy two-fer; Sean Bean is also a very handsome man.

And HANDS DOWN, “Skyfall” wins for Daniel Craig. When Judi Dench’s “M” asks him where they are going and he answers, “Back in time. Somewhere we’ll have the advantage”, he not only continues the storyline, he conveys the sentiments of the franchise: they have headed back to Old School Bond, where they have always had the advantage.

Anyone else care to share on favorite Bond movies?
Watch for more Bond-related topics in the weeks to come.

And I loved it when Albert Finch said … Welcome to Skyfall Emma (or something like that) mistaking her name “M”.
Great choices, Tonette !!! I had a good think the last few days, I don’t think I’ve seen the Lazenby Bond …. shame on me ….

The interesting thing is that when everyone has mentioned a title, the first thing that comes to mind is the theme song. I can’t read “Diamonds Are Forever” without hearing Shirley Bassey’s voice. And I think the music is as iconic as the super spy himself.

    • Oh, good,Micki…me too! “For-EVaaaahhhh!” The themes used to be such big hits, for the most part.Too bad they just don’t get the play they used to .I guess it was the anticipation a new Bond movies used to bring.I think we are all spoiled with movie rentals,Netflix, premium cable channels and all. But this song will go on For-EVaaaaahhhhh!

completely agree on your comments about the latest Bond film, Skyfall. It was a smart move for the writers to harken back to those original images.
As for Geo. Lazenby — I thought he did a great job in the role and he was the only Bond (up through the last of the Roger Moore years) who actually looked winded after a horrific fight.

I enjoyed your take on the “Bonds,” Tonette, but I think I won’t say anything else afa favorite Bond movies. That old dead horse needs to RIP. I’m also “thinking” about answers in those coming weeks you speak of. 🙂
