top 10 books and authors

First I want to say that I am honored to be the new Wednesday fox. My first book comes out November 4th, Love Overcomes is a Contemporary Christian romance. My second book is going through the first round of edits.

This week we are all blogging about our top 10 books or authors. I saw something like this going around Facebook awhile back and I am sure that I did it but I honestly do not remember the answer since then I was told not to think about it. When you give something thought you come up with different answers from the ones you rattle off the top of your head.

Here are my top ten they are not in any particular order though.

Jane Austen the books she came up with. The fact that she gave herself and her sister happy endings in her books. I love looking into how life was back then. How they lived. The fact that I get to have Mr. Darcy fall for me every time I read Pride and Prejudice certainly helps.

The Chronicles of Narnia. My favorite book in the entire series is The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. It was the first one that I read. It introduced me to Narnia. I fell in love with this magical world.

The Hobbit I remember reading this in school. I fell in love with it. This little hobbit that nobody thinks can do anything goes on a wonderful and fantastic journey.

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas this book is just plain fun. Plus his heart grows at the end of the book when he realizes that Christmas is not about the gifts or the food. Without those things you can still have a special and merry Christmas. Just ask Who-ville.

The Little House on the Prairie series this series is what made me fall in love with reading, it was what I read over and over. To this day I still find myself picking up books in this series and reading it. I even had the Little House cookbook. That is how much I loved these books. Now, my daughter enjoys them.

I admit that I love the Veggie Tales books. My kids enjoy them and they have grown on me.

I adore the writing of Wendy Knight. She creates worlds that are so magnificent and incredible. I love reading her books. She describes everything in such a manner that you can really see everything the way she sees it.

Sacajawea by Anna L Waldo this book was/is incredible. I got lost in it the summer after 5th grade. I could still be found in the tree that I loved to climb but I had this book with me or in my room at night staying up way past bedtime because I wanted to know what was going to happen to her next. It was a wonderful tale. One that I hope to share with my children.

The Outsiders. I know this book is not for everyone, my daughter did not care for it when she read it for school. I remember thinking that while some things in society changed many other things had not. You could still be born on the wrong side of town and looked down on by classmates because of that. This story pulled me in. Then it annoyed my brother because I started calling him Soda Pop.

The Bible. I did not read the Bible as child, I had children stories that were based off of the Bible. I have read it through twice now and I find something new each time. I love sharing the stories with my children. I love how it makes them curious. I love how I can find comfort, true comfort in it.

So those are my top ten authors/books. What are yours and why? I’d love to hear from you.

Thank you for stopping by today

Love your list, Angie, and I’m so glad to be starting this new venture of group blogging with you! It looks like you enjoy other worlds – historicals, fantasy, and cartoons. They’re wonderful for escaping the negative parts of the real world. But then the Bible and The Outsiders brings you back, making you face reality and teaching you how to deal with it. Happy reading!

  2. Welcome to the blog,Angela! I am so glad that we have another lovely Fox to join us.
I have my list that was so hard to do, and I almost added Jane Austen. Her times were so interesting, getting to understand not only the ‘whys’ of how the ir society functioned but the realities of daily life of those who were farther down the line in’ landed gentry’.
Also, there is not one book where I don’t stop somewhere and say out-loud to the heroine about the hero,”If you won’t take him, I will!” No one writes a perfect man like old Jane. Far better than the dysfunctional, moody, sometime brutish, Bronte men. When my husband taught and his female students were reading the Bronte Sisters, I’d tell him to get them reading Jane Austen, so that they would be looking for a better quality man for themselves.
Excellent choices! I can see that we are all going to have fun together!

    • Thank you Tonette. I agree with you about the Bronte sisters. While they did write excellent books I just could not understand why in the world the heroine would want a man like that. They were far too tragic for me.

      • I’m afraid the Bronte sisters had a closed life that was dominated by their brother who was undeserving of the idolization they gave to him. They thought he was what men were supposed to be like, and so they created their ‘heroes’ to be like him.I’m very sad for them; it is too bad that they have influenced so many other girls to assume the men’s behaviors were acceptable.

Gosh, this is a great list. Still don’t know what I’m going to be coming up with for tomorrow.
    Welcome to 4F1H, Angie.
Funny thing about the Hobbit. So many people really love that story, but it kinda fell flat with me. After hearing people rave about it (and the trilogy, of course), I finally read it while I was overseas in the winter of 72-73.
Had a really hard time getting through it. It’s not that it was a boring tale or anything. I guess I’m just not cut out for novels in the fantasy realm. You know, like some readers devour Westerns but don’t like Sci-Fic. Or vice-versa.
Interesting how subjective reading preferences are.

    • My dad is like that Jeff. He loves his westerns and the occasional criminal mystery. I don’t think I could ever picture him reading a fantasy book.
The movies are good but the books are better. Books are always better.

Back in the old days, I’d read Sci-Fic short stories… the ones which came in monthly magazines devoted to that genre. But never really got “into” them. And really never had a desire to tackle full-length novels in that genre.
Interestingly, though I used that Western genre as an example — because, as a librarian for nearly 30 years, I know readers devoured them — I’ve only read 3 or 4 westerns in my whole life. Always loved the western movies and TV shows, but didn’t get into reading that genre.

Angie I love that your list has such variety! I couldn’t even begin to make a list.

    • Kathy,
It was hard to narrow it down. I have so many books and authors I love. I had to take a children’s lit class in college and instead of going to the library I went to the book store with my two oldest kids in tow and purchased over 30 childrens books that I needed to review for the class. I seriously need a library for our books. I read the Borrowers to my kids when my youngest was only 9 months old and they all loved it. That book should have been on here but it said 10 😦

I loved your list and the stories in them. I haven’t read them all, but my favorite fiction on your list is The Hobbit. Brings to mind The Lord of The Rings. Love, Love, Love it! The Bible is also my comfort. 🙂 Welcome to 4f1h!
