whacky internet and other mishaps….

I a a bit late today posting for the free week. Since New Year’s Day the internet connection here has been whacky, I don’t mean here in town. Just in the building that I live in. It is my guess that the landlord (who provides the internet) ruined the modem by getting sawdust inside of it. Of course since that belongs to the power company (who will do service calls for FREE when your internet goes down if you go through them) I must believe this is why he refuses to call them to have them come fix the problem. With that being said, everything is patchy. I have not really written in two weeks since my board is on pinterest. A few days ago I started to pull up my pinterest board while the internet was up and working and would then leave it up all day so I would have it when the internet decided to stop working. Anyway that is why I am late today.

Yesterday my daughter informed me that she no longer wanted her long beautiful hair. She does not want to brush it because it tangles to easily. It is too hard to get the knots out of it. She did not want to wait to go to the salon with my mom or my sister and asked me to cut her hair. Hmm, in the middle of cutting her hair I remembered why my oldest son always had a buzz cut, why I refused to cut my youngest son’s hair, and why I decided to shell out the money to go to my dad’s barber for the boys. I CAN NOT cut straight! AT ALL. So she has her short hair and it does not look to bad until the bangs that she decided she wanted. Well it is a bit up and down on there and shorter than I would have liked but she likes it. I told her I would get some curlers and we could curl her bangs under for about three weeks or so until it is just long enough for my sister to trim it up proper and straight.

To go with her new cut she wanted to put blue streaks in her hair. I was alright with this so long as we did not use any chemicals. So no hair dye in boxes. With home made hair color she is now sitting with three things of foil in her hair to keep the blue in for the next several hours. I certainly hope it turns out, if not the stuff I made will rinse out of her hair in 2 weeks at the most and leave her hair its original color. If it does work then next time I told her we are getting a few more supplies so I can do a bit more of her hair and it will not be as difficult as trying to hold the foil in place while applying the color.

My middle child is sore from choreography from the musical. He is excited that he is in it though and does not seem to mind. A bit less than one month to go until the musical, then we can get back to a normal schedule.

That has been the goings on here for the past few weeks. It has really been too cold to go out and do anything. Once again today the wind chill is below zero so it is a day of inside fun. I think the kids are getting sick of that.

I hope you all have a great day.

  1. It is a wise woman who knows her own limitations! One day I will tell the story of how I was thrown into learning to cut hair, but it isn’t a necessary skill, as far as I am concerned…an inexpensive, decent quick cut can usually be found easily enough…sometimes, sadly, they go wrong!
You are a ‘with-it’ mom to go radically to short AND blue-streaked!
Your son is in a musical! How wonderful. My grandson took dance for two years and had a ball…unfortunately, his father chose ‘ball’ instead , so he went into soccer. At least, he still take violin.
Landlords can be dicey to deal with.I hope your internet gets cleaned up soon.

    • I am hoping that her hair turns out well with the blue. I did tell her that if it works I would allow her to put streaks in my hair next time. It is nice to find something that we can do together now that she is in high school.

He loves the musical so much that he is thinking of trying for out for the town children’s play (I think that is in the spring/early summer). He certainly enjoys acting, singing, and dancing.

I bet your grandson having had that dance helped him with soccer. The violin is such a wonderful instrument. Does he enjoy it?

      • Oh, yes, Angie; it has been his choice to play the violin. His school system has free lessons for string instruments starting in 3rd grade and this is his fourth year. Although I am not putting money away for a Stradivarius(!), he does pretty well. He sight-reads music and likes to try his hand with songs on YouiTube. They have some favorite music, (like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings), where they show the notes as it plays and he plays along with them. I also sent for a couple of Disney songbooks that I have him delve into.
One granddaughter also took lessons for a year+, but recently quit. Her sister is just starting the viola; we’ll see if she stays with it.

sounds like a busy and productive household.
But that internet thing sounds awful. How on earth can you meet your own needs, much less your clients, if you can’t rely on being connected?

    • Exactly, come February I am spending the extra money each month to have it installed directly in my place. This way I can make sure that we have what we need. My daughter’s high school is done all online. It is a pain to have to leave to get the internet if I need to do something at a certain time and it is down.

You are a much braver woman than I am, Angela! I would never even consider cutting someone else’s hair. The most I do is cut my own bangs, and they are never cut straight. LOL! They’re always too short, too. But I’m told they look good on me. 🙂 I curl mine under when they’re longer, but I burnt my forehead the other day while I tried to curl my new cut bangs. I’m hoping the burn mark goes away. it did once before when I burnt my forehead. 🙂 You’re also braver in the blue color on your own hair department. GRIN

You sound like a shuttle-mom, but how fun to have your kids involved in what they are! What’s the name of the musical? I like violin music, but really like the fiddle! You’ve got to get your own internet connection. I might go stir-crazy if mine was left up to the devices of my landlord!

I don’t like to be cold. Where are you?

    Take Care!

    • The blue hair did not turn out at all. Our hair is too dark. I told my daughter I would try it again on her come this summer when she is out in the sun more and her hair lightens a bit.

He is in the musical Xanadu Junior. He is limping this week from all the dance practice but he is really enjoying it. It is nice to pick him up from school and have him chattering away about something instead of me asking a bunch of questions to get him going.

We’re in Iowa, close to Illinois. My kids say we are on the old man’s nose (when you look at the map of the United States). It is supposed to get to 36 tomorrow. Which is great for this time of year, I believe the kids are planning on some snow fun this weekend. 🙂

My mum was a hairdresser when she was young and so cut our hair for many years. My brother finally stopped her doing his a few years ago when she had got halfway through before saying “Oops. I’m wearing the wrong glasses!”
