I love gardens! It is one of the reasons I look forward to getting a house, right now I live in an apartment with NO outdoor space at all. In high school I was a member of FFA and loved it. I could often be found in the greenhouse before and after school.
My sister and I have been talking a lot lately about me gardening at her place. Thinking that we will give it a try next year. She is worried that the animals will get to the garden but wants the veggies. The kids and I enjoy gardening so we said we would tend to the garden. My children, my sister, and I have already decided what we want when we do set up a garden. My oldest child is the one who loves to weed gardens. When they attended a private school that was one of the things they did every other day was to go out and tend to the school’s garden during the spring. She loved going to school on those days. Now, she is excitedly looking forward to gardening next year. We need to build up the retaining wall and then build some garden boxes to keep the dogs out of the veggies. The plan is to have that finished by next spring so we can get our seeds in the ground. Though we might get our berry bushes in before autumn.
Memorable gardens….well can I say The Secret Garden? I always wanted a garden like the one in the book. With a little door so I can keep people out of it if I wanted. A place that was all my own, where I could go read without worrying about a phone bothering me or getting hit with a stray baseball while reading under the tree. I gave the book to my daughter when she was seven. She wants a garden like that one too. Though in reality I would be happy with a little spot with tulips, violets, snapdragons, and a few lilac trees with a bench.
Are you the gardening type? Would you rather have a vegetable garden or a flower garden?
that “Secret Garden” sounds pretty cool.
Who wrote that story?
Sounds kinda familiar but I’m sure I have not read it.
Wish you luck on that joint venture garden you’re planning. Hope everything works out.

Jeff, there’s this wonderful thing called Google (and there are other search engines, too) that would tell you Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote The Secret Garden. But since you were a librarian, I’d be willing to bet you knew but were just testing Angie.

Jeff it is by Frances Hodgson Burnett. There are several movie adaptions that are pretty good too.

I loved the Secret Garden. I read it a long, long time ago, so I remember the stage play much better. As I mentioned on Monday, I’m no gardener. Choosing between flower and vegetable gardens, I would have a difficult choice there. Flowers are lovely, and they smell good, but a vegetable garden gives you food, and that’s always a good thing.

I would love to have the space to have both.

YOo have flowers at the start with the vegetables! Also, I always planted marigolds and basil with my tomatoes to help keep bugs away….but I love both veggie and flower gardens.
More on Friday.
I never read the Secret Garden when I was young, but I read it to my boys more than 20 years ago. I would have wanted one when I was young but now, I like to see around me, esp. the trees…although, I suppose, it could be a really BIG secret garden!
