One of Those Books…

It is review week and I have made it through two and a half books on my TBR list.

Have you ever read a book where you did not want to put it down? A story that so completely had your attention that it wiggled its way into your unconscious thoughts? I just finished a story like that. Heartless by Kelly Martin.

Heartless is not the sort of book I would have picked up on my own. I’m not one who seeks out paranormal stories. I know Kelly Martin’s books and know that she is an amazing storyteller so I was willing to give this book a chance. I am glad I did!

Heartless is Gracen’s story. Gracen is a well developed character who you immediately feel drawn to. Every night she dreams of Hart, horrible nightmares that feel very real to her. One day she sees someone knew in her dream, a few hours later that person is dead. Throw in a demon and an angel and this story has it all.

When I started reading I expected to read a few chapters then put it aside to go to sleep like I usually do with a book. It was impossible with this story, I drifted off to sleep while reading. When I woke because I had dropped my phone (luckily it had not fallen far so it did not break) I started reading again. Finally, I forced myself to put it down so I could get a few hours of sleep. Then, the story made its way into my dreams. It was as if I was sitting in a theater watching a movie, as the story I had read replayed while I slept. The next morning, I fed my kids then settled down to finish the book. I had to know what was going to happen next. I was not disappointed! This is such a great read. I have already told my brother that this is a book he needs to read, it is not often that I recommend a book to him but when I do he knows it is going to be a good read.

It is not often that a book takes over my dreams. I remember it happening with one of Jeff’s books, I got caught up in the story and it stayed with me. I can only recall it happen maybe three times in recent years. All three of those books have been exceptionally well written. I am on edge waiting for the second book in the Heartless series.

Heartless by Kelly Martin is up for preorder now and will be released Sunday January 17, 2015.

Have you ever read a book that found its way into the other areas of your life?

  1. I have been caught up in a number of books, but lately, it seems to be because the dialogue is amusing or I want to see what a quirky character will do next.
I have known Kelly for a few years now but have not read her work,(although there are a few on my tablet!) I think I just may have to put this one on it, first in the queue of hers!

  2. I do get so caught up in some books that the world around me slips away. I have actually stayed up until 5:30 am reading because I refused to stop. If I were to go on to bed, my mind would still be dwelling on that book, might as well finish it. It is a good thing I do not hold a job besides being a homemaker. I have also had books that I was so invested in that when a character dies I have cried and had to turn my Kindle off and deal with the loss. I am a series junkie, and you have a tendency to see beloved characters that are elderly pass away.

    I’m glad I was in somebody’s dreams — LOL.
I’ve got some of Kelly’s books on my Kindle and they’re slowly moving up on my TBR list. Is Heartless the one (of hers) that you’d recommend for me to start with? Or a different title?

I’ve had dreams that later tuned into stories… but don’t recall any stories that invaded my dreams.

    • Which of your stories started as dreams?

Probably more than this one, but the most recent was a novella I completed in late summer. Woke with an image in my head from the dream. Wrote down that part and immediately launched into notes for how it could become a novella. I’ve mentioned it to a publisher but have not formally subbed it yet. Hoping to get it subbed before the end of Jan.

You know a book is good when you can actually watch the screenplay in your dreams! Kelly’s writing is awesome, and I’ll have to make room on my TBR list for this one. Thanks for the recommendation!
