This week we’re talking about our pitch to the Big 5. I honestly never gave it a lot of thought before. I am horrible at query letters, they make me sick. Trying to sell myself and my work is difficult. At least in writing. I do tend to do better in person. I have been told I could sell ice to an Eskimo and was told to go into sales. However I never considered that.
I have two minutes in front of one of the Big 5. I suppose I would go in with one of the stories that I am working on, that will be out in October. Man of the Mist, here is my pitch.

Man of the Mist is a clean Supernatural Romance that will spark the imagination of young and old alike.
Three hundred years ago shortly after the witch trials swept through the land. Alexander Gray gave up his life to save a young girl who had been accused of witchcraft. He watched as the child grew up, married, and had children of her own. From the mist he observed the life he could never have.
Running from the chaos of the city she always despised Roxanne Kinsley had moved to a small town to care for her grandmother. The beautiful old Victorian house her father had grown up in was now hers and she could not understand why her dad had refused to come back. She loved running the high school’s drama department. The night her car was in the shop she walked through the cemetery to get to work. As the mist rose around her and she rushed to the safety of the school auditorium she came face to face with the man of her dreams, Alexander.
He knows he can never give her the life she deserves but he cannot force himself to stay in the mist and away from her.Meanwhile, Roxanne discovers old family secrets hidden in the attic, secrets that could have all the answers.

There is my pitch. I think I could do better in person and the spur of the moment than I can do on paper. I find myself wanting to constantly revise what I write.

I think pitching in person is a better way to get your idea listened to; you can interact and see what is and isn’t working with the person to whom you are pitching. That having been said, it is easier said than done!
You gave a good summary, but you need more ‘pitch’ to sell it.

I do much better in writing – as I mentioned on Monday, I get tongue-tied and forget even basic vocabulary when I’m speaking, especially if there’s something important riding on what I say.
Your story sounds intriguing, and I’m sure it’s going to be awesome. What makes this different from other “falling in love with a ghost” romances?

terrific blurb — makes me want to read it.
Like Patricia, I tend to get tongue-tied if put on the spot to extol the virtues of my own work.
But I’m much better able to brag on my creations in writing.
Not sure what I’ll come up with on Hound Day tomorrow. Maybe I’ll go ride an elevator with somebody today.

I would much rather send a query letter. In a pressure situation like that, I would forget all the important things I wanted to say. In a query letter, I would remember everything I needed.
