Could you say that again, please?

Perhaps this isn’t a post I should be working on this morning. It’s the second week of summer vacation and this is the first opportunity I’ve had to sit at my computer and write. Any other time I’ve sat at my computer to send messages to my daughter’s doctors (another frustration I won’t document here) I’ve been repeatedly interrupted. “Mom!” “Mom!” “Mom!” I’m pretty sure I heard the word ‘mom’ more times than the number of words in the sentence I was trying to type. When does school start?

So phrases or expressions I’m tired of hearing: pretty much anything my kids say more than three times in as many minutes. They watched Hotel Transylvania 2 and picked up the phrase “Blahblahblah!” Everything becomes “Blahblahblah!”. Then uttering the phrase takes on a hysterical giggle and nothing good comes from that. Someone falls off the couch, lands on the dog, and we’re searching for bandages for the minuscule cut we can’t find.  Occasionally the repetition is funny, like when my son repeatedly sings the radio station call sign like it’s a song. I’m sure this is a sign of my husband’s genes.

Other phrases I’ve heard a lot over the last week: “S/he started it.” “Why do I need a bath? I’m not dirty.” “Why do we have to do to bed?” and the most cringeworthy:

“I’m hungry.” “I’m hungry” is always followed by “Can I have a snack?” (Snack is only defined as something with 53g of sugar per swallow.) It does not matter if it’s 9 am and breakfast was five minutes ago, or noon and lunch (which they refused to eat) was three minutes ago, or 4:45 and supper is quite obviously on the stove, “I’m hungry” will always be followed by “Can I have a super sugar bomb drink and 47 cookies?” I’m not sure how they survived the day at school.

When they aren’t starving, their other obsession is our new-to-us camper. “Can we sleep in the camper tonight?” I put the answer to this one on Dad. He let them. So far they’ve made it 72 minutes before coming back into the house.

Now if you will excuse me, I need to go eat all the chocolate in the house before they get home from Bible School.

LOL! I feel your pain! I don’t know if it’s just my boys or boys in general, but they tend to make a lot of funny noises when they have a conversation. The noises are getting on my nerves already and it’s only the second week of summer vacation.

Oh Joselyn, I think your pain is felt by every mom – at least those who are home with their kids during the summer. Since I worked on the school schedule I would look forward to vacation – and then look forward to going back to school! One phrase that needs to be added: “I’m bored.”

  3. “He/She started it!” I’m going through that with my grandkids and my standard line is, (after “I don;t CARE who started it!): “Come to me! The second person who does it is the one who will get into trouble…tell me when he/she starts it!” Does it work? No, but It gets both parties into trouble!

thoroughly enjoyed your delightfully worded post today. Glad you finally found a few connected moments at the computer without the tugs of the kiddos.
Isn’t it strange how the more disagreeable traits always come from the spouse’s side of the family? LOL
Here’s hoping you survive the next several weeks of summer.

  5. My boys are also always asking for a snack. Luckily for me they’re happy with apples and bananas.
