“I’ll Take Forgetful Authors for $400, Alex.”

This week, one of the foxes asked a question about game shows: “What one would you be on and how would you do?”

GSN_(Milgreen)It just so happens that on the odd occasion that I feel like watching television – which isn’t that often – I’ll gravitate toward game shows. It’s not that I don’t enjoy period dramas and the odd sitcom, but if I’m going to watch drama, I need to set aside a couple of hours to watch it from beginning to end, and that’s not always possible. Giving myself a half hour to challenge myself mentally seems to be less of an indulgence than taking two hours to watch a movie. As for other shows, my days are pretty full, and it seems my schedule for one week never seems to look like the next, so it’s difficult for me to catch a continuing storyline. With game shows, there’s no problem with time or continuity.

Family FeudWhen I’m caught up with school work and don’t have a pressing writing deadline, sometimes I’ll pick up my most recent craft project and turn on the Game Show Network. I enjoy Family Feud, Cash Cab, and $100,00 Pyramid. Once in a while when hubby is awake, we’ll watch Match Game. Family Feud isn’t intellectually challenging, but it’s fun to hear the sometimes ridiculous answers that people come up with. My hubby laughs when I yell at the television, but then I remind him about how he yells during football games.

You might notice the game shows I watch don’t include those shows where there is any physical prowess, luck or strategy involved. I’m just not any good at those types of games. I’m also not one for shows in which you try to out-do others by insulting or browbeating. I’m not good at guessing prices, and I don’t want to dress up in a costume, so that eliminates a couple of my husband’s daytime favorites.

Cash-cab-logoSo that leaves game shows that deal with general knowledge. There are three that I would love a chance to participate in: Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Cash Cab. If I turn on the TV and one of those shows is on, I’ll go to that station. I’ll try to answer the questions before the contestants and figure out if I could have won big. Sometimes I’ll do really well; other times I have to admit I’d be out of the game almost as soon as it started.

JeopardyI remember filling out an application to appear on Jeopardy once, but I never submitted it. I just have this nagging feeling I’ll have a senior moment at the wrong time and forget everything I know. If I’m in the Cash Cab and make three mistakes, I’ll be let off somewhere on the streets of New York City with no money and no idea where I am. If there’s one thing I hate, it’s being lost. So to answer the question of how I’d do, my guess is that I’d freeze up and remember the answers an hour or two later.

I guess I’ll just be an armchair contestant. Most of the games now have their own app, but my phone already gets plenty of use, and I often watch television to give my eyes a break from the computer and phone screen, so I probably won’t be downloading those any time soon. I’ll just dream of winning those big cash awards and soaking up the sun in my Tuscan villa.

What game shows would you want to appear on?

  1. My favorite is Jeopardy, but I’d probably be out the first night. Never fast enough in my responses, although when they have a category I do know pretty well, I feel proud of myself when I can answer and the contestants cannot. It’s a good way to keep my mind working, lol!

I agree, Lucy! In some categories I’m totally lost, but I’m always happy when I know most of the answers. And I get frustrated when I know the answer but can’t come up with it soon enough! Thanks for weighing in.

I’ve always wanted to be on The Price Is Right–I sent away for tickets before a trip to L.A., but didn’t realize you had to specify the date you want to attend, so they sent me the tickets after I returned home. Haven’t had a chance since then.
I’m not brave enough for Jeopardy, though I never miss an episode!

I remember The Price is Right! I could never do well on that show, though – I don’t shop very often. Thanks for visiting, Diana!

armchair contestant is probably about my speed also. I’ve have to think long and hard about this topic before Thursday.

  4. Yelling at the TV, that’s me. I had to give up on watching game shows for that reason.

  5. I yell at the tv when I watch game shows. Here lately I have been watching The Great American Bible Challenge on Netflix. My youngest likes to try to beat everyone to the answers. He gets so excited if either of us answer a question correctly and the contestants didn’t.
I forgot about Cash Cab, I used to love that show. We recently got the Gameshow Network so I might have to turn that on sometime.

Fun post! I love Family Feud, but i don’t watch many game shows currently. I used to love Hollywood Squares and Tic-Tac-Dough and Match Game. I like shows where I can answer simple questions. Jeopardy has always been a bit too challenging for me 🙂

  8. At the InD’Scribe conference last year I was a contestant on a Genre Feud take-off of Family Feud (I didn’t do very well) and on a Trivial Pursuit game team that won, but it was a group effort. I also attended a Price is Right taping in L.A. a few years back. One of my friends got to go up as a contestant. She won a whole suite of family room furniture that she gave to her son.

I love Trivial Pursuit! The Price is Right baffles me. Maybe it’s because our Midwest prices are so different than those in LA.

  9. Fun post. I guess Wheel of Fortune would be my choice. Somehow words come to me faster than anything else.

I like Wheel of Fortune, too. I can usually figure out the puzzles, but sometimes the final wheel stumps me. Thanks for weighing in!

I’m with you on the freezing up part. I do really well on certain versions of Trivial Pursuit, but as soon as there’s a time involved, my brain turns to mush.

Great question, Patty. I love Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. If I could be on one, it would be Jeopardy. Alas, my “trigger” finger wouldn’t be fast enough. My mom was great with Wheel because she did crossword puzzles every day. I’d probably hit a bankrupt, esp. if I knew the answer.

My friend Helen Andrews was on Jeopardy and came in 2nd; she won dining room furniture and a smaller prize she didn’t claim. She always said ‘I didn’t win’ but do you know what it takes to even get on that show? I wouldn’t dare try!
I also know an architect from Cambridge, Leah Greenwald, who was on in the 90s, a 5-time champion, then she was in the tournament of champions and that ‘favorite decades’ show, won a bundle.
