Powers That (Might) Be

This week we were asked what talent or superpower we’d like to have.
Oh, wow!

Talent? I never got a chance to learn to play a musical instrument and I have no idea if I would be any good at any of them.

I was one of the few who never aspired to be an actress; that life is just not for me. Frankly, any sense that it might be fun was squashed by an early experience with a play in second grade. Most of my life I tried not to be in the spotlight in any part of life.

Although I have made crafts and beautiful food that required some artistic talent, I always wanted to paint. I never really took the time to give it as go, as they say. I’d love to do beautiful watercolors.

I would also like to be able to sing. Again, not on stage, but for my own enjoyment. I used to sing to my nieces, my sons and my grandkids when they were little. Bless their hearts, they put up with me! I never even have a good SPEAKING voice! Now, my range is ridiculously low and lessened.

My husband can’t carry a tune at all. He had a  fellow teacher for many years  who was a musical genius. You would not believe the sound that woman could get out of a rag-tag group of teenagers! She was offered a number of more prestigious jobs, but for her own reasons, turned them down, yet she could not do a thing with my husband’s voice. I hope his reward in Heaven is to be able to sing.

As for superpowers, well, how about not needing sleep? I had to go for years on 3-4 hours and somehow managed, (I’m thinking of the “Footprints in the Sand” story here), but those days are gone. I even nap often now. I guess “Super Health” would cover it all, or “Self-Healing”. Oh, those would be wonderful.

Being able to ‘heal’ or fix anyone or anything else would be great.

Super strength would be good, ( to go around doing good, like Superman/girl).

(I’d really like to have my ‘super memory’ back.)

I still have good distant vision. The Earth curves and mountains rise, so you could only see so far anyway, so super vision is out, unless I could see TINY things, (but then I’d get freaked-out by what’s around!)

For FUN powers, I don’t think anything would beat Invisibility. Consider the possibilities! Of course, I’s ask for my clothes to also become invisible!

Super Speed! It would be fun to run to see relatives far away in no time. (But running to the store would mean I’d need super strength to get the groceries home.)

Flexibility? I can’t see myself as “Elastigirl”, (aka “Helen Parr/Mrs. Incredible”). However, now that I am considerably less flexible, I am really having trouble getting to the back of the ‘blind corners’ of my cabinets, so  that power would be nice.

“Magnetic’ powers, where I could call things to come to me, would be great! It would not only be handy in day-to-day life, but again, for Do-goodering: Getting cats out of trees, stopping someone from falling, getting the weapon away in hostage situations. (Hey, if you are going to fantasize, go BIG!)

I can read quickly. I would like to read more quickly and still savor the writing. I have the answer to this and other problems: TIME CONTROL!

That’s it! That would also handle the travel/speed and sleep problems, not to mention the hostage situations, (I’m going to keep that heroic thought going!) The house would be cleaned, yet I’d have time to read and write. I could enjoy sitting down and seeing a show without jumping up for things and feeling the need to multitask. I could make time with people/family around me to go by slowly, (or quickly, depending on the people/family members!)

My watched pots would boil!

Time. I’d manipulate it, and you’d never notice.

Oh, this is tempting!

How do you feel about that power?

  1. Manipulating time would be handy. With all this talk if super powers this week I’ve been wondering about the side effects. I wonder if you stop or slow down time would it cause the to be sped up afterwards causing you to miss out on things?
I think I saw a show that had something like that happen.

I’m all in for Time Control and Super Memory.
Don’t think I’d want that magnet power, though — unless I could easily switch it off. I’m picturing walking through my garage and having tools and nuts & bolts flying toward me and affixing themselves to my body. Nope.

    • HA! Getting smacked in the head with a wrench, no thanks! I meant sort of “Accio” or “Wingardium Leviosa”, a la Harry Potter, being able to manipulate objects. Yeah, no, not real magnetism!

Time control is a fantastic idea, or at least having things take the amount of time you think they should. 🙂

Being able to see super small things would be freaky. All those germs. blech.

If you could control time, you probably wouldn’t need any other powers. You’d get to all your appointments on time because the appointment wouldn’t happen until you get there! Love it. Sounds like a book JL Salter might write.
