What is in my desk drawer?

Wouldn’t you like to know?

By Jeff Salter

Our topic concerns the contents of drawers… presumably those in our office / study / writing place.

Before I reply (concerning my present situation), let me clarify the arrangement I had in my WORK office for most of my 26 years in the library administration job from which I retired in 2006. [On most Saturdays, my work office became my personal desk for handling my bills and any creative writing projects that I had going.]

That large desk had a spacious center drawer which held pens, markers, highlighters, pencils, paper clips, etc. I think I also had keys in there and certain important lists. Probably some TicTacs and Lifesavers, too. That desk also had three drawers on one side — and those held various publications, certain files, and miscellaneous paperwork. The other side of that desk had one top drawer which held about the same as the other three… plus a drawer which held upright file folders. I no longer remember which files were in that largest desk drawer, because my office had three short metal cabinets with two drawers each for other files. [I think at least four of those six drawers were for correspondence of various kinds.] Presumably the files in my desk had more importance than the others in the metal cabinets.

No, this is NOT my desk / office… but there are times mine looks nearly this bad.

Present situation

Now, fast-forward to late 2017 when we moved into our newly built house on Fossil Hill on my wife’s ancestral farm in the heart of Possum Trot. Here in my narrow study, I have mostly book shelves [9 units of varying sizes which feature some 34 shelves of varying dimensions], eight metal file drawers, 4 wooden file drawers (under-utilized because of their construction and the narrow space I have to move about in), a few milk crates, and more boxes than I can count.

My primary workstation – which holds my desktop PC and monitor – features a high cabinet and a low cabinet. But no drawers in this “desk”. I miss that desk drawer… and make up for it by keeping a lot of clutter on the “easel” which sits between the bottom of my monitor and the top of my keyboard. It’s modified from what arrived with this unit, but necessity is the mother of invention.

Question

What about YOU? If you have a desk drawer – at home or work – what’s inside it? Are we even allowed to know?

I have a sectional desk (aka a large piece of L-shaped furniture). It has attached bookcases and cabinets. I adore it because it is functional on many levels. Not only does it display my books and various skulls (of my enemies…Haha! JK), but it also keeps all the things a writer/mother may need. One drawer is full of research, important documents, files and files of writer/editor notes, and family personal documents. The other drawer has all things craft and school-related— pens, markers, notebooks, folders, googly eyes, hole punchers, sticky notes, colored pencils, etc. I also have a cabinet that holds research books, printer ink, batteries, computer paper, extra laptop, cords and adaptors, candles, extra speakers, and more.

But the good news is that most of the time, everything is orderly. May not be uncluttered, but definitely orderly.

I’m envious of creative people who can also be orderly in their home and work environments. When I was a library administrator, I had one of the messiest offices some people had ever seen, but I usually knew where to find what was needed. In fact, I was often the go-to guy for obscure reports or particular documents that the others in my section had misplaced or couldn’t find (or didn’t want to search). Ha.
Presently, I wish I could force myself to take a few weeks and just ORGANIZE things — from my garage to my closet to my study. It would be nice to be able to find things again.

  2. Another no-drawer person! I have to say that I am surprised, but glad for you! It must be freeing!

I’ll have to admit that when I had a study it was just a little messy, but like you I knew where everything was.

in my retirement life, however, I’ve misplaced a LOT of things. Due in part to the move from LA to the farm house, from the farm house to our built-home, and because many boxes of belongings are in storage.

I miss my center drawer, too! My writing utensils are in a jar nearby, but I have to actually get up to reach them. Of course, that’s probably better for my health.

all kinds of things — incl a teeny calculator, note pads, and writing implements — end up on my easel. Normally these would be in the center drawer that I’m missing now.

  5. LOL I’m glad that isn’t your desk, Jeff. But that hutch does resemble my desk hutch…somewhat. 🙂 Pictures and special notes are hung on it so I can glance up for a reminder. You’ve seen pictures of my desk.

Regarding the drawers in the desk, there are only two. One is for files and the other for mailing supplies. The cabinet designed to hold a computer tower has been changed into a cabinet with drawer units. It now has six plastic drawers holding items I use for writing and mailing: paper, tools, labels, etc. Shelves also surround me, and they hold makeshift drawers using drawer organizers for all those little items used at a desk. It still gives me plenty of shelf space for papers, binders, books, etc.
