Washington and Lincoln- Men That Were Progressive

Apotheosis of Washington and Lincoln

First, let me wish George a happy 279th birthday today and Abe a happy 202nd birthday (on the 12th)- talk about a cake conflagration there!

Both of these men were progressive before their time. Mr. Washington owned slaves but he came to believe that it was wrong to do so and even at one point stated that this new country could only stay a country if the institution was abolished. Here’s the actual quote: “nothing but the rooting out of slavery can perpetuate the existence of our union.”

George Washington freed his slaves in his will and also had the younger ones educated or taught a trade. As well, he established a fund to take care of the old and ill.  This was truly the actions of a man ahead of his time.

As to Abraham Lincoln, he was what I like to call the second father of our country as he did everything he could to keep this new country together. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The interesting thing about it was that Lincoln had wanted a gradual emancipation of slaves since around 1849. The Emancipation proclamation didn’t free the all of the slaves in the United States, it only freed those in the rebelling states. Lincoln didn’t free all of the slaves as he didn’t want to antagonize the states that had slaves but were loyal to the United States.  What irony was that?

Of course, Mr. Lincoln was still working toward the freedom for all slaves. The 13th Amendment to the Constitution wasn’t ratified until 1865 in December. Lincoln was already dead by then but his work helped to get it done.  If he had lived, I believe things would have moved faster and the healing of our nation would have happened sooner.

One interesting tidbit- Mississippi didn’t ratify the 13th amendment until December 5, 1995. How crazy is that?

One of my pet peeves here in my area of Florida is that the schools  and state offices close for certain holidays but not this one. I mean, really, these two men gave so much for our country and also for the slaves, why can’t we honor them like we have in the past? I close my office every year to  make a stand. With apologies to Scarlett O’Hara, “As God as my witness, I’ll continue to honor these men.”  There ya go, my controversial statement of the week- Daisy only thought she was the one that was gonna post something to get in trouble about.

Had to sneak this in- it’s release day for my new book- Surfer Bride: http://www.bookstrand.com/surfer-bride

I could complain about my company’s policies when it comes to President’s Day, but we don’t get Memorial Day off either. *shrug* These two men stood up for what they believed in. That’s all anyone can ask of themselves. Happy Release Day, Jillian!

    • Sorry if this came across as complaning- it really was just an observation of how these men have been marginalized by some state governments. AND yes, they did stand up for their beliefs- something I wish more people would do now. LOL!

      Thanks re: release day!

    Oh wow! Happy Release Day!!

Wait…so….Abraham Lincoln was a fellow Aquarian? Well, I guess that makes sense. 🙂

Sorry y’all don’t get the day off there. Up her in the socialist NW, we get the day off. Or at least, kids do, and so do govt employees. As a mom, that means I had a day “on” yesterday.

    Cheers, D

  3. Being as I own my own law firm- we did close, but the dude that rents space in my building didn’t. They worked 1/2 a day. The kiddo had school so I got some writing done. That was nice.

    Yay!!!!!!!! Happy release day, Jillian!
And you’re so right. President’s Day does kind of feel like a throwaway holiday sometimes. I think it’s an important one. There’s so much controversy these days that it’s important, once in a while, for us to ground ourselves by remembering where we came from.
Thanks for the reminder! Now I’m off to the bookstore… 🙂

    • Thanks Laurie!! I’m already at # 24 on the best seller list for the last 30 days! My paralegal gets crazy checking this stuff and hollaring it to me. LOL! She’s more excited than me. I saw your book advertised in the new RT magazine yesterday when I was at Barnes and Noble.

Thanks for agreeing with me about our dear departed Presidents!

    Happy release day!
The movable date we now call Presidents day, as you know used to be two days: one for Abe and one for Geo. As I recall, Geo’s day had already been marginalized by the media and merchants when it became some big hooray shopping sale day. I don’t see that as much these days, but at one time, Geo. Wash’s b-day was THE day of the year to shop for bargains … not the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Oh well, G.W. would roll over in his grave if he saw what had happened to the republic he fought so hard to create and nurture.

  6. Jeff- no blood but that speck you saw in the sky about 2 pm? That was me as I went into orbit. My paralegal is a messy, messy person and she found a file in the chaos that is her desk (which I fuss about all the time) when I asked for it. She was SUPPOSED to do something on it at the end of Nov, beg. of Dec and I was waiting to hear from the other side about it- SHE NEVER DID IT!!! So, why the h**l would I have heard from the other side???? Sent me into orbit-
