Spring Fever, Winter Temps

Spring is in the air, or it should be. But the air here is COLD. There was a chance of snow today but as far as I know that shifted to the north and now we are supposed to get rain and severe thunderstorms. It will be a cold rain. My children  were not thrilled when I had them put their winter coats on instead of jackets yesterday morning and this morning. After all they’re on Spring Break it should be warm!

On to the topic of Spring Fever. Usually my children and I go for a Sunrise picnic down by the river during spring break, but the school calendar was changed this year. Break went from April to March. Which is nice because it lines up with Easter this year but as it occasionally snows here in March it does not feel like spring. So the picnic has been postponed. There will not be doughnuts and orange juice while we watch the sun makes its brilliant appearance in the sky followed by a walk and stories of the Clam Man.

Typically my children and I spend more days at my parents’ house where there is a yard to play in. Jessica anxiously looks for signs of her flowers as the boys run around getting muddy. The tulips were starting to push their way up out of the ground, sunflower seeds have been planted but they’re inside in a pot waiting to be transplanted to the yard when it gets warmer. All of our friends who have veggie gardens are talking about what they’ll plant this year while my kids and I are wondering if we could do some container gardening in the apartment.

Usually bikes are out and cleaned. Being ridden with jackets on but not this year. The kids are getting slightly bored with not being able to go for our walks. But soon enough it will warm up enough to be able to enjoy it. Hopefully before flood season comes. Since the place we love to walk is down by the river.

About two weeks ago I purchased Battle Ship. That game seems to have brightened moods. My youngest adores the game. We hit up the book fair and spent more than I should have so the kids would have plenty to do while they’re waiting for this dull part of winter to come to an end. Right now we’re embracing indoor winter activities in an effort to fight spring fever. Hot chocolate is still being made, books and blankets have been frequenting the living room, and board games are nearly always out.

Does it feel like Spring where you are? Do you have a case of Spring Fever?

  1. You have wonderful family traditions, Angie! I love hearing about them. YOur children will have wonderful memories.
It is a shame that most school systems no longer feel the need to co-ordinate Spring breaks with Easter; more than a shame, it’s a scandal.
OK,I’ll bite,I don’t know Clam Man.Can you fill me in?
Do you have a balcony or a patio? I lived in a townhouse for a dozen years that had a year that was mostly deck and I did very successful container gardening.Tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and leaf lettuce did very well for me, along with flowers, of course!

    • We don’t have a balcony or patio. Maybe we will use my sister’s yard.

We live in a community famous for pearl buttons. Down by the river is a statue, I think its called The Harvester. On our first sunrise picnic about five years ago my kids wanted to know about The Clam Man. I wove a tale about how he comes to life at night, harvests clams, then takes them to the old pearl button factory. Since that day he has heen responsible for a few things by the river like when the large rocks were gone (the city removed them but the kids never let on that they knew).

It does not feel like spring here today. In the last two hours, we have had rain, snow, sleet, ice chunks, snowflakes the size of golf balls, and now sleet again. The temperature is dropping so this slushy mess will freeze up tonight. Ironically, I was going to go to a weather spotting class tonight. I’m not sure I dare drive there.

is that the old-fashioned Battleship board game ? or the new-fangled electronic version?
I recall enjoying the old one, but we never owned it… just had friends who owned it.
Our weather has been a mix of early spring and late winter. Woke to a frost on Mon or Tue morning — aftr days in the 60s +.

I’m sure your kids will remember your family activities with fondness. You’re very creative.
I’m a few days late checking in here – like Joselyn, we had some dicey weather on Wednesday – but since she’s farther north she had it worse than we did. I was below the freezing line so we had rain rather than snow and ice. And the rain lasted two days. It’s cold and dreary. Definitely not spring time weather!
