Me TV

This week’s topic asks us on which TV show of the past we would like to appear and if we’d like to write our own episode. That is a hard one, for sure.
I watched a lot of television as a child yet there is no way anyone can say that it was detrimental to me. Of course, broadcast TV was all that we had and S&P,(Standards and Practices),were still in effect, so there was very little out there to corrupt my mind or morals. Cartoons were often those that had been shown in movie theaters before feature films and not made for kiddies. Many of them were made during The War, (WWII), and had many mature themes. I don’t mean what people call “Mature” these days…I find most of that immature. They were worldly references that sparked me into asking questions.
I watched I Love Lucy and Dick Van Dyke until I could probably, after many years, still recite much of the dialogue .I mentioned that I’d like to be on The Dick Van Dyke Show in a comment this week; I still would. I’d like to be the neighbor on the other side, (or maybe even the other side of the Helpers), or , better yet, another writer in the office. Watching those shows I learned about mortgages, rents, landlords, leases, bosses, work, contracts, lawyers and many things that went on in the adult world that some of my contemporaries did not understand. Those who did, also watched the shows.
It seems that when I was very young I loved Liberace’s show. But no, I would not write myself into that show; I don’t play any musical instruments.
I could never get into the war dramas that my brother loved and always had on. I did like some of the westerns. At a very tender age I found John Russell as The Lawman quite attractive.[I must have been pretty precocious!] I particularly liked Bonanza but good grief! Any woman who put herself on the Ponderosa would have her life in serious peril. The best she could hope for is a broken heart and a ticket to somewhere far away.
Something with I have never spoken of openly I have decided to go public with here today. After all, it has been many years. I guess I need to consider myself retired, as the others have moved on. For all I know, the organization has gone unfunded and disbanded; the director has died.
Here goes,[deep breath]: I am a card-carrying U.N.C.L.E. agent. Seriously. They are still in my wallet, one for each of the two top sections. One puts me directly under Napoleon Solo; the other puts me directly under Illya Kuryakin.[Read as much into that as you will!]
To be honest, I don’t have the intrepidity for it all. It unnerves me just to play hide-and-go-seek.
As much as I like my conveniences, I think today I may choose Gilligan’s Island. I thank Heaven that it was produced back in the days when the Howells were a couple who were not constantly at each other’s throats and that all the relationships were friendly and not scandalous. The beautiful, warm island with pristine beaches, plenty of food and nice people…perfect. I’d make a few teeny-tiny changes, though. The other girls would still be nice, mind you, but not a beautiful farmer’s daughter nor a glamorous movie star, not by a long shot. And the Howells would not be the only married couple on the island. I’d be Mrs. Roy Hinkley, aka: “The Professor’s Wife”. What can I say? I have a real weakness for attractive eggheads.
How about you? Any series you’d like to consider? How does a trip to Gilligan’s Island sound to you?

Quite a few shows you’ve listed … again Dick van Dyke, a big yes from me! Of course, Bonanza! LOL, yeah I remember those days. The rest …. gotta pass, sorry.

    • To each his or her own,Iris! You have to realize a couple of things. Gilligan, and a little later, The Man From UNCLE, were on when I was a kid and very impressionable. The Bond movies were considered too risque and David McCallum….well! As For Gilligan,I avoided watching that show for decades afterward, pure CORN, but back then, every other intellectual or scientific man was shown as a real pansy, nerdy and weak. That nice-looking fellow of a Professor was the whole package! I married a nice-looking brainy guy!
I appreciate the show now because I figure if it were made today, Mrs. Howell would be chasing and catching the Professor,(who probably swung both ways), the Skipper and Gilligan would have a relationship, the girls would be playing musical huts with all the guys, esp.Mr.Howell, and Mrs. H would constantly be making detrimental comments about his age and lack of manhood. THAT is what passes for comedy these days. It’s easy to find the characters likeable after decades of vulgarity passing as entertainment.

Apologies tonette. When I said pass I meant I don’t know them. I wouldn’t dare judging someone for their childhood likes of certain tv shows.

      • I thought maybe that was it,Iris, but really,Gillian’s Island runs all over the world at some point during the day and it IS cornier than heck! As for The Man From Uncle, as much as I loved it as a kid,(12-ish), when we tried to watch it recently, the music was so bad that we stopped trying to sit through it…yes, that bad….lots of bongo music! I wouldn’t blame you if you couldn’t sit through them either!

I liked John Russell also. I believe he was the bad guy in Clint Eastwood’s film “Pale Rider” many years later. He looked old and ill in that movie.
So you’re a card-carrying UNCLE agent? Very cool. VERY cool.

    • “BOUT TIME someone thought my being an agent was cool! Thanks,Jeff; I was beginning to think I was way too old for everyone.
Yes, ol’ John Russell , bless his heart. But when I was about 6,I thought he was soooo attractive. My mother used to say,”Look how cute Peter Brown is!”, But I’d think, “Yeah, yeah, cute….bring on The Lawman!”

I just mentioned to Jeff that I’d like to be a Bond Girl. 😉 But I think Gilligan’s Island would be a fun place to be, too! Who would I be? Hmm I’d probably be more likely to be a Mary Jane (was that her name?) character than a Ginger type.

    • Mary Ann…and oh,I can see you as Ginger!

Yeah. I remembered Mary Ann before I went to bed last night. The name Mary Jane was in my head bc there is a resident I am friends with at momma’s care center by the name. 🙂 Thank you for seeing me as Ginger! (I think) 🙂 I just hope you don’t remember her character the same way I do. She always struck me as a more put-on, self-assumed type of character, whereas Mary Ann was, to me, a more honest, genuine person. That’s how I would prefer to think of myself as more like her.

      • OK, you are more Mary Ann…as I am.But you strike me as someone who could be glamorous!

🙂 Actually, the dress is velvet Notice it’s not a close-up. A couple of nerves in my left eye were paralyzed after the injury I suffered. I’ve kinda got a complex about it. Laurie’s seen it up close and personal. Thanks for liking my picture! 🙂
