Autumn is the harbinger of winter.

My five senses about autumn would all be relative to the mindset I’m in. When I’m in touch with my youth, autumn looks, sounds, smells, feels, and tastes like a return to school. “/

Nowadays it’s the season that spells an end to summer. Same thing more or less, I think, except I don’t need to go to school any more. Whereas in my childhood I missed the freedom of summer, now I miss the nice warm days of summer.

Autumn is the season of colorful leaves being blown across the yards. The wind feels cold and makes me uncomfortable. It tastes like the cold of winter snow. The heaters smell musty from their lack of use in the hot days of summer.

It also speaks to me of the approaching holidays. Holidays are supposed to be festive times, but for those who must spend them alone; they are torturous times. The smells of holiday foods are comforting. It’s a time when you’re surrounded by family and friends. It’s also a time when the pounds pack on while you’re not looking. It’s also the harbinger of holidays, I guess.

yeah, that musty smell from heaters when first used after a long summer — ugh.
It seems no matter how carefully you vacuum out the heaters, that first time or two to fire them up — it always smells like you’re roasting dog hair.

  2. You touched on quite a bit with a few words…and really touched base with me a few times.
I had not thought of the ‘return-to-school’ smells and feelings in some time time, particularly, I think, because my grandkids start school so early , at the beginning of August.
Please let’s not bring up ‘adding pounds’,LOL!
