I love home improvement shows. This summer I discovered Fixer Upper. After watching several episodes, my husband would find me standing in the kitchen trying to figure out how to open up a wall, so that the kitchen would not be separate from the rest of the house. He would just shake his head.
I’ve also debated about painting the kitchen cabinets. We have a lot of cabinets. It’s probably a lot more work than slapping on a layer of paint.
I finally settled on a smaller project. I would paint the entry way. It is currently a dark wood. I could paint it a light blue. It would be a simple, inexpensive project that I could do myself. Sounds good, right?
My husband wanted to replace a window. It’s a good idea. The window is old, single paned, not insulated. We found a window at the Habitat Re-Store. Got a good deal, so still an inexpensive project, right?
Then an old discussion came out. Our driveway heaves in the winter. The screen door will open just enough for me to squeeze through. The frame for the regular door shifts. It doesn’t close and sometimes doesn’t seal. The window would fit well in the door space and we could put a new door in where the window was. It would require a new staircase outside and reconstructing the interior stairs and landing…
So now we have a two new doors, two new windows, new insulation, new lights, new drywall, and new stairs. Still coming are new flooring, new paint, and new hanging fixtures.
My inexpensive project went from $ to $$$$.
sorta reminds me of “Ms. Blandings Builds Her Dream House”
My wife watches several of those makeover and flip-house shows. She can take in sev. hrs. a day of that stuff. Not me. I keep wanting to get to the end and see which house they picked… or if they decided to keep the renovated place or buy a diff. one.

I like to watch them, but then it makes me want to do stuff to my own house. Time and money are a real problem for that.

yeah, and their entire presentation is patently deceptive. Even though they make it clear that a matter of days or weeks have elapsed, we (the viewer) still see the thing being completed in the 60 minute program slot… so we are deceived into believing it’s fast and fool-proof.

We are at 6 weeks for an 8’x8′ space. Granted my husband is doing all the work and it isn’t his full-time job, but it certainly isn’t a quick project.

One thing always leads to another…and another…and another. We have multiple unfinished projects here at the farmette. Good luck with the entryway; it looks great!

Thanks! I’m just glad no one has fallen off the platforms yet.

I love home improvement shows too. We’ve improved every house we’ve owned and are in a project that started years ago, long before book deadlines began sapping time.

I’m sure it will look great when it’s all done! We watch a lot of those home improvement shows, too. But hubby is NOT handy, so any improvements have to be done by other people – which costs even more. Hope you post before and after pics!

It’s so much brighter already and that gives me hope.

Fixer Upper is a favorite here. My boys especially like it. My youngest then tells me what he will put in a house for me when he is older.
I bet you will be glad when your project is over. Do you think you will be tackling the kitchen any time soon?

Probably not. It would involve moving cabinets and that would lead to painting them and that would lead to new countertops and backsplashes and… If I end up painting, I hope it doesn’t go farther than that.

Undeniably believe that which you stated. Your favorite justification appeared to
be on the net the simplest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I certainly get irked while people consider worries that
they just don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the
whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal.
Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
