Resolutions- Or the Lack Thereof

I have a circular logic about resolutions. Many, many years ago, my new year’s resolution was never to make a new year’s resolution again. The reason? They always fail. So, is the fact that I resolved never to make a resolution again and renew that resolve every year, a resolution in and of itself? What say you?

Kind of like a chicken/egg question which I have resolved as well. It is my belief that the chicken came first. I’ll let you guess why I think that.

I don’t make them either. If I can’t make a goal for myself during the year, trying to set one at the beginning of the year isn’t going to make much difference. Happy New Year.

I make ’em but they’re a lot more general than they used to be. More like guidelines, really. lol

  3. I hadn’t even thought to make a resolution since I was really young, as the few I made fell through…not always my fault at that time. This year, however, I resolve to continue the de-cluttering, to put my house in more of a ‘guest available’ order AND do more practical writing…that is one I ‘sort of’ of make every year, but now, I truly feel the time slipping by.

I’ll bite, chicken first because something would need to sit on the egg to hatch it?
Resolutions – nope, Goals – yes and with the firm commitment that noting is set in cement.

I agree: chicken came first … for the very reasons Jillian cited.
I prob. do more ‘resolving’ than I actually realize, but it seldom corresponds with the New Year. I’ll be puttering around — no particular month or season — and realize I need to do THIS more or do THAT less … and I will ‘resolve’ to make a correction. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. More likely: I’ll make that correction for a brief period and then lapse back to status quo.
Hey, I think I just wrote my Thursday column!

You’re going to have me up all night thinking about that darned chicken and egg thing. And as someone who went back to weight watchers this morning, I’m now going to have food on the mind all night! Lol

  7. I agree with your reasoning on why the chicken came first. Same as you, I don’t make resolutions bc they don’t pan out. You’ll have to see my reply on Laurie’s “Over The Backyard Fence” for my full dissertation on the subject. GRIN
