Autumn, when senses come alive

By Jeff Salter

This happens to be my 249th post on 4F1H, which began in late January 2011.

This week we’re welcoming fall weather by discussing the look, sound, smell, feel, and taste of this season.

Not sure why, but (for everything but the LOOK) my mind went back several decades.

The Look of Fall

I love the color of the leaves as they change on the trees — reds, yellows, oranges… and several shades in between. This fall, most of our foliage is still green, for some reason. Maybe it’s all the rainfall we had over the summer.

Here’s a photo of a recent autumn in Possum Trot.

The Sound of Fall

The most distinctive sound I associate with autumn is the sounds of high school bands practicing and playing for their home football games. For some 26 years, we lived just across a ditch and field from the Airline H.S. Stadium and I loved that sound every Friday night that they played at home. Did not attend all that many games in Bossier City, but I certainly went to several when I was in H.S. in Covington LA. Go Lions!

The Smell of Fall

Don’t misinterpret this as implying I’m an arsonist, but I love the smell of burning wood. In the fall, especially, the smell of burning dead leaves and dead branches is a lovely memory. I also remember high school bonfires before homecoming games. I bet the fire marshals don’t allow bonfires these days, but when I was a teen, we had some that were 50 feet high and had to be guarded overnight to keep the rival team from tearing it down before we could light it.

Also love the smell of wood-burning fireplaces. And the crackle and pop of the flames as they catch certain bits of wood.

The Feel of Fall

I love the warmth of those fires – whether bonfires, campfires, or fireplaces – and how it feel so much warmer than if you had a dozen blankets over you.

I love the crunch of brown, crispy leaves — a covering nearly a foot thick on the trails in the woods.

I love temperatures that are just right for my favorite leather jacket, but not cold enough to freeze my face or ears.

The Taste of Fall

I needed help with this one because I could only think of pumpkin pie. But my wife had these to offer: apple cider, candied apples, popcorn balls, and Halloween candy (especially wax lips and wax mustaches).

Question:

What about you? What looks, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches do you love about Autumn?

I love the weather in Fall, so long as it is still warm. I do NOT like the cold. At all. Fall weather is still warm, yet comfortable. Not like Spring when even as the temps rise there is still a wintry chill in the air. Smells: I’m with you, Jeff. Love the smell of burning leaves. Where I grew up, everyone burned leaves. Sounds: The leaves rustling in the breeze, the sounds of animals become clearer, too, like coyotes and owls. Tastes: Hmmm… I keep thinking of Thanksgiving dinner. Buttered rolls, juicy turkey, cranberries, dressing, you get the picture. Yum!

buttered rolls — yum. And the warmer, the better.
Yeah, like you, Jenn … I dislike the COLD weather. But the cool weather of fall suits me just fine. I sometimes wish we had only two seasons: early fall and late spring.

  2. My post is ready and we share some favorite memories, Jeff! As for the wax lips and teeth, they were wonderful, but the flavors were just not the same,(or as good), when I bought them for my sons, oh,about twenty-five years ago.
    Congratulations on your milestone post!

thanks. I had hoped that we could have “observed” the 1000th post (of the collected total of 4F1H)… but I let it slip past me.
Denise also reminded me of those wax things that were simplified mouth organs… with 4 or 5 note holes. I do remember them, now that she reminded me, but don’t recall chewing them down as I did the other wax items (like the tiny rack of beverage bottles).

  3. We used to have bonfires at homecoming. The opposing team’s name would be carved into wood.
Popcorn balls and candied apples have to wait until Jess and Quin get their braces off. A few more years without them.

I can only imagine the perils of eating sticky, gooey stuff while wearing braces.
Bonfires — Yeah, now that you mention it, I think the opposing team was burned in effigy.

  4. Raccoon roasted with plenty of onions and yams. I only had it once, when I was about 8. Since then, every time I have a meal with yams (which somehow seems to be mostly in the fall) I think of that roasted raccoon the pastor’s family had to eat to avoid insulting the church member who invited us over for Sunday “dinner.”

Congratulations on your 250th post! I used to love bonfires when I was young. Now I’d rather sit in my comfortable chair with a gas fire in the fireplace. Halloween candy is definitely one of the perks of fall!
