Spring has Sprung!

Spring has sprung and so have I. The past several months my family has been changing. Those of you who have known me for awhile know that I and my family love all things winter and snow. However, this year, things shifted for us. I don’t know if it was because I was unwell during the winter months or if it was just time for a change but this past winter wasn’t a joyous one for us. Our celebrations were limited, we only ended up having one of our Christmas movie nights and that one was pretty much a bust. With a member of our family missing this past season I think we were all just wanting to forget about the holidays and all the fun we normally have in the winter months.

Now that spring is here and our windows are open during the day it seems that everything is being refreshed. On the warmer days Wyatt and I head outside. There have been a few frustrated days when he wasn’t allowed to study outside because it was too wet and cold but there have been lovely evenings spent on the porch visiting with my parents while we watched the returning birds and enjoyed the breeze and warm sunshine. We’re still wearing jackets and occasionally a blanket makes it to the porch with us but it is wonderful to be outside again.

Mornings often start with the birds waking me at around 5 with their songs. It’s so early that if I get up the dogs have to drag themselves out of bed as well. They’ve gotten used to sleeping in until about 6:20 in the morning. There’s a lovely rabbit whom I believe is living under our front porch, my daughter has named it Flopsy.

The vegetable garden plans have been made and are ready to be put into action as soon as we hit about mid-May. Wyatt is anxiously waiting to get his swings back into his garden so he can study there once again. The tulips, gladiolus, and hyacinth that we planted last Autumn are popping up, the ones that survived the hungry mole that is. We’re getting ready to start mowing again. So many people around us have already mowed at least once and raked their yards. We’re waiting. Giving the pollinators a chance to emerge and allowing the grass to seed. We have started to get some of the garden and porch decorations out of storage and placed where they belong. The strings of fairy lights will be going up around the garden swing soon along with the macrame chairs.

I know people who have complained about the rainy, dreary days that spring brings with it but I love those days too. Those days are soothing to the soul. I don’t know how to describe it but a good dreary day filled with rain and rumbles of thunder is so calming.

My little family is on the go. From sun up to sun down we’re busy with either work, school, family, or just being out in nature. The television hardly ever gets turned on and I’m ok with that. Spring is such a wonderful time of year.

Do you get a renewed sense of energy when the seasons change?

I love both spring and fall. I’m happy to be able to go outside without bundling up. But this week we’re having cold temps again and the winter coat is back in use! Rainy days are a nuisance, but if I can stay home I can get a lot done. Still, I can only imagine how brown everything would be if we didn’t have them, so I guess they’re a necessary nuisance.

In spring, I love the sounds and sights of the new post-winter LIFE. But those same things cause allergy attacks in my wife and daughter.
One of my favorite things during spring is coffee on the front porch in the mornings before the day heats up. I love listening to the birds chirp.
