Does a Bear Snack in the Woods?
By Jeff Salter
Well, you know what I mean. Asking whether I snack is like asking Superman if he has a cape. Duh. Snacking is my life. Well, that, plus napping. Uh, and watching movies. Oh, and reading. Of course, I also write a lot. Oh, heck… anybody who knows me knows I’m famous for snacking. And, yes… I snack as I write.
So the actual question this week pertains to what we snack on while WRITING. Let me go get my list. Ha.
Former List
I have to break this up into two lists because – beginning in the fall of 2011 – I dropped everything containing gluten because of severe stomach issues (though I did NOT test positive for celiac itself). Anyhow, what I used to love snacking on was:
Oreos, Chips-Ahoy cookies, Ginger Snaps, Pretzels, cinnamon rolls, Twizzlers (I called them red licorice), and other products I can’t recall at the moment.
And, longer ago – because of the caffeine (rather than the gluten) – my go-to beverage switched from Coca-Cola Classic to Root Beer.
Current List
These days, I concentrate on “straight” chocolate (i.e., with nothing added that might contain gluten) such as a Hershey Bar… or chocolate products which specify they’re gluten-free, like Butterfingers, Snickers, etc. Also (of course), M&Ms Plain and M&Ms Peanut.
In the mornings, my primary beverage is coffee, but by afternoon/evening, I’m usually drinking juice. It’s a customized blend of half Cran-Apple and half White Grape-Peach. So I guess it’s got about 25% of each flavor. They should bottle it that way and call it Jeff Juice. LOL. [I mostly gave up root beer about the time (2010-2011) I was trying to solve my stomach crisis. I had figured all that carbonation was not doing my tummy any good. But I still have a root beer now and then… maybe a couple of times per month.]
Summary
There you have my lists of snacks, but I should comment on the frequency. While I’m just puttering along, I don’t actually snack as much as you might imagine. But when I’m sprinting – those weekly hours of concentrated typing on one WIP or another – I usually devour M&Ms and Mixed Nuts.
Interestingly, when I watch TV downstairs – a couple of times per week, typically – my favorite snack is Cousin Willie’s Kettle Corn popcorn. Willie kindly popped it before hand, so it requires no effort beyond opening the bag.
Questions:
Do YOU snack a lot? What are your “go-to” snacks?
[JLS # 316]
During the weekly sprints I don’t snack. I will he something waiting for me for after the sprint though.
It had to be hard giving up those snacks when you gave up gluten.

Your former list looks a lot like mine. I had to give them up because of what they did to my waistline. Your juice sounds great, but I’m not sure my tummy could handle a lot of it. Guess I’d better stick to my tea!

my waistline suffered also, as you can imagine. Fortunately, after I began exercising again, I was able to keep a semblance of equilibrium.

oh, yeah, it was tough giving up my favorites. And the G-F counterfeits fall way below my expectations.

When I thought this topic up, Jeff, I knew I could count on you! (Not-so) Funny how we have had to change our lives when our health changes. But we manage to find some goodies for ourselves!

I think I surprised my close family members by the discipline I’ve exercised in staying clear of gluten.
The marketplace is doing more and more to cater to the G-F crowd, so new replacement products are showing up. But they’re expensive, typically.

I try hard not to snack. I battle the bulge daily. *sigh* Life is so unfair. I pretty much love all the foods you listed, though I’m not a fan of juice. Did I mention how unfair life is? I chew a lot of gum or pop Orange Mint lifesavers to keep from snacking. My drink of choice is Sugar-Free Rock Star energy drink. I just like the taste and I sip it throughout the day, so it’s not really used for the energy. But if I could snack without consequence, I’d be all about Peanut M&M’s and Twizzlers. *shakes fists in air* Damn you calories!

those energy drinks — are they loaded with caffeine?
Yeah, Twizzlers could make a meal for me. Until I found out they were heavily infused with wheat [gluten], I could down a package before they’d go stale.
For me, juice is big simply because I hate the non-taste of water. I know people who guzzle water all day — more power to them. But water makes me gag.

Yeah…the Rock Star is loaded with caffeine. But it’s about the same as coffee, depending on the serving size. I like carbonated, flavored water. I drink a lot of that, too.
Damn it! I want some Twizzlers RIGHT NOW!

me too — even though they have absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever
