Thanksgiving Guest

                                               Guest Fox: Laurie Ryan
                                                           By Jeff Salter

Have you ever been pulled over by a Police Officer when you were speeding but didn’t realize it?  Well, I wasn’t speeding and Laurie Ryan wasn’t a cop … but the imagery is appropriate.  My first encounter with Laurie could have turned out considerably less pleasant than it did.
I had posted an invitation (to visit this blog) on one of RWA’s section mail groups.  I was unaware – my oversight – that type of ‘self-promotion’ was against that section’s rules [it relates to an issue of tax-exempt status].  Laurie – a moderator (which must be a thankless task) – intercepted my e-mail and reminded me of the rule.
Normally, I’m not crazy about being corrected.  But Laurie was so gracious, it actually turned into a positive experience.  Imagine being pulled over by a gentle and big-hearted cop with a sense of humor!  So naturally I invited HER to visit this blog … and she did.  Then she wrote back that she was friends with one of the Resident Foxes!  Since then, Laurie has been a regular visitor here.
So it’s wonderful to welcome Laurie as my Guest Fox for November.  Be sure to check on the new book by Laurie Ryan and Lavada Dee [at bottom, below].

                                                         Thanksgiving
                                                           By Laurie Ryan

First off, I’d like to thank Jeff Salter for having me here. And for calling me a guest “fox”. I love it! Knowing how insightful and funny his blogs are, I’ll try to make this interesting.

Thanksgiving Day
I have to wonder just how many folks will be here on Thanksgiving Day, but I’ll be checking in on this blog while visiting our godchildren for the holiday, always fun. And that’s not just because I don’t have to cook.  : )  When I thought about what to write for a Thanksgiving blog, I thought about Jeff’s ability to capture moments in time with his poetry. I wondered if maybe I should drag some of my poetry out. So I did. Lord, you do NOT want to listen to that drivel. Shades of “Stanyon Street and Other Sorrows”. [That’s one of Rod McKuen’s poetry books, by the way.] And I’m not comparing myself to the master, only saying that my words back then (post high school) were mired in what was missing in my life, instead of the good that was there for the taking.

What a Wonderful World
As I write this blog, I’m listening to Celine Dion sing Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”.  Is there any more perfect blending than her voice and his song? And what a great way to set the mood for today, when we reflect and give thanks for everything good in our lives.
                        I see trees of green.
                        Red roses, too.
                        I see them bloom,
                        For me and for you.
                        And I think to myself,
                        What a wonderful world.
Okay, so it’s not Spring. In fact, I might have actually seen a snowflake last night. But the words themselves elicit a feeling of warmth and gratefulness.  I, for one, am thankful for a lot of things.

Memories and Blessings
For Thanksgiving at my Grandma’s home as I was growing up. I remember: more cousins than I can count, card tables everywhere for a sit down dinner, homemade rolls from a “pinch of this” recipe no one could ever duplicate, and Grandpa’s slide show afterwards where we cousins snickered at each other’s baby pictures.
For the family I’ve been blessed with, including my children and grandchildren.
For a husband who is doing dishes at the moment to give me time to write this blog.
And for the opportunities to meet people that writing has given me (and that I’ve finally managed, I think, to figure Tweetdeck out).

Things to be Thankful For
I hope you have as many things to be thankful for as I do. I’ll leave you with a good reason to give thanks…the great Satchmo.

      Garsh, Tonya, thanks.
Not only are you one of my blog’s most regular visitors, but you are usually the very first each Thursday. And — drumroll — you were my very first Guest Fox!
For any who don’t yet know Tonya, she has 4 (?) books out and at least 3 (?) on the way … not counting her stories in two anthologies or her promotional how-to book co-authored with another writer.

Very pleased to welcome Laurie Ryan here today. I hope most of you who have visited here in the past will take time today — yeah, I know it’s a busy Holiday — to stop in and say ‘hello’.
    Welcome, Laurie!

I’m very glad to be here. Normally, I’d be prepping the bird to go in the oven about this time. This year, I don’t have to cook, or bake, ANYTHING. It’s a very strange feeling! So I’m glad to be here today getting into the holiday spirit.

Just got the turkey in the oven and on my first sit down cup of coffee. I’m Thankful for so many things. For my family and those in my life now and for those that have left beautiful memories. For being born in this time and this place. Laying in bed last night, warm, well fed (oh yeah maybe to well fed), secure and safe, made me think of all the people including children that at that very moment were cold or hungry or scared or all of that and more. Made me feel humble as well as thankful.

Great Post – with a great group of foxes. I agree with you and it’s been awhile since I’ve heard It’s a Wonderful Life. No one can sing it like Louis Armstrong.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

I SO know what you mean about well fed, Lavada. I’m not cooking this year, but we’re soon off to enjoy our friends labors in the kitchen. I expect I won’t be moving much this evening.
My husband and I help out with a local meals program and each time we take dinner food, I am amazed at how many families with children show up for a home cooked hot meal. Sigh. Here locally there’s one family that, for the past several years, has put on a Thanksgiving feast for the indigent all by themselves. Granted, they are a large family, but I am thankful to them for doing it, as I’m sure all the families and folks who get a chance to eat there are, too.
      Happy Thanksgiving!

  7. Lovely post, Laurie! Thank you for taking the time to write about your experiences and include the rest of us in your moments of reflection. I am grateful to the writers who’ve walked the author path with me this year. You know who you are! And I’m grateful for the internet, and ebooks, and all the ebook distributors out there.

Despite the heartbreak and the want, there is still the heartwarming and the abundant in this strange world of ours. Yes, it is a Wonderful World. Thanksgiving happiness to all!

Welcome, Theresa, glad you could stop by.
Yes, I also think about those who must cope without adequate food, clothing and shelter. Very sobering. Makes me that much more thankful for everything available to me.

Hi, Theresa! It’s great to see you here. I’m not so sure I’m as thankful for the internet. That’s a double edged sword. It’s my bread and butter, but also quite frustrating sometimes. Maybe I just need to give it more love. 🙂
      Have a GREAT Thanksgiving!

Well, it’s been a long day, here in Possum Trot: 10 in-laws staying 2 or 3 nites, 15 for Thanksgiving dinner, and 2 more for dessert. Didn’t get my nap! So I’m too bushed to stay up as late as I regularly do on Thursdays.
I want to thank Laurie Ryan for being my Guest Fox today. I love having guests here and normally do so once a month.
Hope everyone has had a great holiday today. We had a lot of ‘hits’ here today, even though most didn’t leave comments. Holidays and company … probably.
    Good night!

Thanks again for having me, Jeff. Our Thanksgiving, once we got past the three hour drive in heavy rain and wind, was exceptional. And we were all sound asleep by 10PM. 🙂 I’m glad you had a fun one!

I’m a bit late (was traveling on T-Day), but I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Laurie, I loved your post! Especially when you mentioned Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.” While we only played it during the birth of my first child (had one of those special “birthing rooms” complete with mood lighting for that kid), I think of all three of my children when I hear that song. So while it’s not technically a Thanksgiving song, I can’t help but be thankful for all the small things in this world when I hear it.

Glad you could stop in, Monday Fox. I certainly understand the complexities of travel … especially on or near a big Holiday.
It has always interested me that so many people like Satchmo’s singing — myself included — though he had such a raspy, distinctive voice. And he’s supposedly known more for his trumpet but I can’t say I’ve ever identified/enjoyed any particular one of his trumpet tunes. Weird.

Ahhhh! I love the idea of this song being played at your child’s birth. What a COOL thing to do, Micki. And yes, my Thanksgiving was great. I hope yours was, too. We traveled about 3 hours to spend it with our godchildren. I hope you didn’t have to travel far.
